Sarah Cohen (MFA '11) exhibits photographs from Mumbai Studio Abroad (Spring 2011)

Sarah Cohen (MFA '11) has photographs featured in a solo exhibition, entitled Jewish Life in India, at the Leona P. Kramer Memorial Gallery, Gratz College. The images Cohen will be presenting were taken in synagogues in Mumbai, India, while she was there for the Howard A. Silverstein and Patricia Bleznak Silverstein Photography Studio Abroad Class in Spring 2011: an opportunity she was granted during her final year of her MFA at the University of Pennsylvania. The show is on view until October 26th.

Olivia Coffey, Recent Photo Alum in group show in Chelsea

Olivia Coffey’s vivid color photographs capture the fragility of partnership and the fluid, subtle and often fleeting nature of intimacy. Calling upon cohabitating couples in “practical… profitable [and] constant” partnerships, Coffey shoots the duos posed comfortably in their shared homes. Printing the final selections as large scale Archival Pigment Ink Jet Prints on luster paper, the artist displays the intricacies of private domestic space in the larger than life, hyperreal proportions one might associate with film, television and related media.

Olivia Coffey was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and currently resides in San Francisco.

For his 2nd solo exhibition with Samsøn, Cuban American, Philadelphia-based multidisciplinary artist Gabriel Martinez addresses the complex intersections at the core of contemporary, gay male sexual identities. The exhibition, a diverse mix of new works, questions male power dynamics; subverting and making reference to a wide range of cultural products at the heart of socio, political and sexual discourses on masculinity. In Martinez’s hands, these elements, playful at first, belie deeper meanings about sexual desire among men, reclaiming and bringing what seems to exist at the margins' full center.

Nancy Davenport, newly appointed Assistant Professor of photography

Nancy Davenport is a welcome addition to in the Department of Fine Arts, where she has been appointed as Assistant Professor. Davenport's teaching, commitment to cross-disciplinary exchange, and international reputation as a significant interdisciplinary artist working in the fields of photography, animation, and digital media will make her a valued member of the standing faculty. Davenport explores photography through a series of computer-manipulated photographs that challenge illusions of the real embedded within the photographic medium. She examines the politics of representation by tracing the continuities of historical photographic practices within contemporary digital culture. Recent projects interrogated the social structure of workers at manufacturing plants in Germany and China and the stigmas and complexities of brutalist architecture. Davenport will continue her expansive and provocative research at PennDesign.

Brent Wahl ‘Group Show’ at VOX

Vox Populi presents the fourth solo exhibition from Brent Wahl, entitled ‘Group Show’.

In Group Show, Wahl refocuses his interest in abstraction in full force. Drawing on his fascination with the optical and spatial shifts that happen between three-dimensional structures imaged in two-dimensions (via photography), he embraces a playful and experimental stance with this work. Collaborating with himself, he compiles a “group show" of imagery that is at once thematically linked and visually diverse.
