The ICA is pleased to present Jeremy Deller: Joy in People, the first mid-career survey of this unpredictable, generative, and vibrant artist. Hugely influential, Jeremy Deller (b. 1966, London; lives London) has helped to rewrite the rules of contemporary art over the past two decades by putting people at the center of his work. Operating as forums for discussion, display, and social interactions of all kinds, this work is disarmingly democratic in its muddling of class and cultural hierarchies. The sheer delight Deller takes in various forms of sub and folk cultures—Goth style, Manchester music, pro wrestling, street parades, and historical reenactment societies—transmits itself with a sense of awe at the creativity and zeal with which people resist mainstream values and patterns of consumption. His work explores compelling social territories, while the artist himself variously assumes the roles of artistic producer, publisher, filmmaker, collaborator, curator, parade organizer, and cultural archivist. Joy in People offers an important opportunity for American viewers to experience the work of one of Britain's most significant artists.

Philly Photo Day 2012 will take place on October 26th.  On that day, everyone in the city is invited to take a photograph of whatever you like.  We’ll print and hang every single picture for a unique exhibition capturing a day in the life of Philadelphia.

This year, we’ll reach out to local community centers, providing cameras and teaching artists to a wide range of people.  These artists will teach photography basics like lighting and composition, help participants select their best photos and submit them to PPAC, ensuring widespread access to Philly Photo Day.

And it gets even better.  Select images will be placed on Septa buses and trains and even on billboards.  One of those images could be yours!

There are only three rules to Philly Photo Day.

1. 1. The photograph MUST be taken on October 26, 2012.

2.2. The photograph MUST be taken in Philadelphia.

3.3. You may only submit ONE photograph per person.

You’ll upload your photograph right here on our website, but you won’t be able to do it until October 26th.

Mohammadreza Mirzaei (MFA '14) has been selected to participate in the Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography in Switzerland.  The works that have been brought together under the theme of “see and be seen” explore photography’s ambivalent dialogue with the voyeuristic and exhibitionist gaze.This 16th edition of the festival shows various aspects of the intrusive gaze that is inherent to photography.

Ceaphas Stubbs (MFA '13) in Group Show at Eponymy, Brooklyn

Photographs by Ceaphas Stubbs (MFA '13) will be included in the group show Works at Eponymy in Brooklyn. Works presents various two-dimensional work from seven artists located throughout the country.  The exhibition explores the cross-section of experimentation, abstraction and a sensibility to move beyond conventions in both art and society.

Works was curated by Amani Olu and also includes the work of Conor Backman, Teresa Christiansen, Melanie Flood, Thomas Jackson, Anthony Smith, and Julia Staples.

Works opening reception will be on 09.12.12 from 7-9 pm.  The show runs through 08.31.13.
